Card Merchant is once again thrilled to be part of the exciting Catan Organized Play program here in New Zealand, providing an opportunity for Catan enthusiasts from all corners of the country to showcase their strategic prowess and compete for glory.
We hope that one of our winners goes on to become the Catan World Champion for 2025!
The 2024 Card Merchant Christchurch Regional Champion went on to win the New Zealand Nationals and was flown to Germany to compete on the global stage!

⚙️ Tournament Structure
Players will engage in multiple rounds to determine the ultimate Catan champion from each store’s National Qualifier tournament.
Preliminary Round:
Each participant will play three separate games of the base set Catan.
Opponents will rotate for each game.
At the conclusion of the preliminary round, the top 16 players with the highest win/point totals will advance to the semi-finals.
Semi-Finals:
The top 16 players will be split into four intense semi-final games.
The winner of each game will earn a seat at the finals table for their National Qualifier event.
Final Showdown:
The four semi-final winners will face off in an epic final battle.
The store champion will receive:
A $200 travel stipend to attend the National Championships at Wellycon
The signed copy of Catan (6th Edition) used in the finals, autographed by all players and staff on the day.

If fewer than 16 players register, tournament policy dictates we skip the preliminary round and move straight to the semi-finals.

Near Mint condition cards show minimal or no wear from play or handling and will have an unmarked surface, crisp corners, and otherwise pristine edges outside of minimal handling. Near Mint condition cards appear 'fresh out of the pack,' with edges and surfaces virtually free from all flaws. '
'Lightly Played condition cards can have slight border or corner wear, or possibly minor scratches. No major defects are present, and there are less than 4 total flaws on the card. Lightly Played condition foils may have slight fading or indications of wear on the card face. '
'Moderately Played condition cards have moderate wear, or flaws apparent to the naked eye. Moderately Played condition cards can show moderate border wear, mild corner wear, water damage, scratches , creases or fading, light dirt buildup, or any combination of these defects. '
'Heavily Played condition cards exhibit signs of heavy wear. Heavily Played condition cards may include cards that have significant creasing, folding, severe water damage, heavy whitening, heavy border wear, and /or tearing. '
'Damaged condition cards show obvious tears, bends, or creases that could make the card illegal for tournament play, even when sleeved. Damaged condition cards have massive border wear, possible writing or major inking (ex. white-bordered cards with black-markered front borders), massive corner wear, prevalent scratching, folds, creases or tears. '
